Getting around: Navigate Atlanta's distinct neighborhoods--prestigious Buckhead, charming Virginia-Highland, and artsy Midtown, but bring a map because every other throughway is named Peachtree something--boulevard, street, avenue, road?you get the idea.
Local flavor: Fried green tomatoes are not just for fiction. Get some at Mary Mac's Tea Room along with fried okra and fried chicken. Wash them down with sweet tea, and top 'em all off with banana pudding or peach cobbler.
Place we love, even if it's touristy: Friday Jazz Night is every third Friday at the High Museum of Art, which showcases American, European, and African art. Admission is free every first Thursday, and it's a great place to chat up locals.
Get out of dodge: Just 16 miles east of downtown is Stone Mountain, home to the world's largest exposed granite, which includes a carving of Confederate figures. Hike 1.3 miles to the top, or hop on the summit skyride or scenic train.
History lesson: Tour the birth house, church, and gravesite of Dr. King, our nation's illustrious Civil Rights leader, at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site in Sweet Auburn.
Chill-out spot: Yearning for green space? At Piedmont Park in Midtown you can swim, roller blade, play baseball, grill, and even kick back on the grass.
Did we mention it's free? Centennial Park is the legacy of the 1996 Summer Olympics. Check out the Fountain of Rings, the world's largest interactive fountain.
Local tipple: While some stick to sweet tea, Atlanta is the home of Coca-Cola. Sample some 38 exotic flavors that you can't get stateside at the $45 million World of Coca-Colas' Club Coca-Cola.
Editors Picks:
Centennial Olympic Park
Techwood Drive and International Boulevard
Phone: 404.223.4412

Built for the 1996 Olympics, this park is located in the heart of Atlanta, next to the CNN Center. It is not a park for recreational sports, but rather, it is a great spot to stroll around, eat lunch, or bring the family. The Fountain of Rings is the largest interactive fountain in the world, with 251 water jets spraying water 35 feet into the air during a synchronized music, water, and light show.

Flying Biscuit Cafe
1655 McLendon Ave, NE
Phone: 404.687.8888

Bright, cheerful sunflowers are painted on the walls, and the tables are covered with mismatched tablecloths--this eclectic decor creates a cozy atmosphere in historic Candler Park. Knowing when to come is paramount, as the wait can be long, and when it gets crowded, the cafe can be less charming. Breakfast is served all day, and you can't go wrong with the Flying Biscuit breakfast (eggs, sausage, grits or potatoes, and a big, fluffy biscuit), or the "Love Cakes" (black bean and cornmeal cakes, with salsa, sour cream, and feta). Other creative, gourmet picks include orange-scented French toast and the Meggxican wrap. Don't leave empty-handed--the bakery next door sells biscuits to go.

Horizon
1397 North Highland Avenue
Phone: 404.876.0676

This Virginia-Highland neighborhood restaurant blends Spanish, Mediterranean cuisine with Southern cooking. The interior is elegant and welcoming, with midnight-blue walls, hardwood floors, and dim lighting. Start with the fried calamari or the mussels. Dine tapas-style with small plates, or opt for larger dishes like the jumbo lump meat crab cakes on corn chowder or the seared salmon and gnocchi. The diverse wine list is impressive, as are the specialty martinis, which locals clearly find impossible to resist

The Fox Theater
660 Peachtree Street NE
Phone: 404.881.2100

Designed in the late 1920s as the Yaarab Temple Shrine Mosque, this theater has survived extensive financial peril over the years, but is now one of the only successful non-profit auditoriums in the country. Everything about the theater exudes opulent extravagance. The facade and exterior structure boast onion domes and minarets, while the interior decor is lavishly over-the-top with fake beams, balconies, and vaulted ceilings painted azure blue. Plus, no one can resist the lure of the "Mighty Mo," a humong

Thelma's Kitchen
768 Marietta Street
Phone: 404.688.5855

This popular soul food lunch haven attracts all kinds. In typical cafeteria fashion, you can create your own platters or order from the chalkboard. Choose from fried chicken, catfish, ribs, or various roasted meats. Order Southern-style veggies like okra, lima beans, or collard greens, and don't forget the cornbread. Heck, while you're at it, splurge on dessert: coconut or sweet potato pie.

Underground Atlanta
50 Upper Alabama Street Suite 007
Phone: 404.523.2311

Underground Atlanta is a three-level, six-block entertainment and shopping center located below ground in the heart of downtown Atlanta. Don't miss this unique juxtaposition of Atlanta's past and present--the old space used to be a merchandising district for trading cotton. Check out the myriad stores, restaurants, and occasional live performances.
